Recreational fishing; focus on angling and how it is done

Fishing is an activity that has for many ages been used as a means for getting food for many communities. Fishing is also a favorite pastime for many people today. Fishing has especially become popular as a recreational activity due to the ingenious method of fishing known as angling.

Angling is a fishing technique that applies the use of a rod, a line, a hook, and some bait. In this fishing technique, these parts are connected to provide a very effective fishing tool. The rod is connected to the line and the line is connected to the hook which usually has the bait. These are the basic parts used in angling although in modern times other auxiliary accessories are added. This includes items such as sinkers, bait casting reels, and floaters.

When angling, the fisherman first baits the hook with a suitable lure for the fish. Bait usually consists of fish for the food or replicas of food for the fish. When angling, one has to know the kind of fish they are targeting so as to use the appropriate bait. For example, when fishing for bass, one has to use bait that is part of bass’s favorite food. Examples of natural bait that is used when fishing includes leeches, frogs, worms, lizards, flies, insects, and small fish.

After fixing the hook in the bait, the angler will then throw the hook into the water at a position where he thinks there are high chances of attracting the fish. This could be at a zone where the fish are known to frequent. It could also be at a point where the angler has noticed some fish activity.

Today, with the advancement in technology, mankind has been able to create a fish finder to help in identifying the position of fish beneath the water. These fish finders use sonar to detect the movement and locate the position of fish beneath the water.

Once the hook is strategically placed in the water, the angler then patiently waits for the bait to catch. The hook is maintained in the same position with the help of the rod and line although in modern times one can also use sinkers which keep the hook and bait in position. Today anglers are also using devices known as floaters to help highlight the position of the hook in the water.

The bait will often attract an unwary fish that will approach and bite into the bait. Once the fish has bit into the bait, the hook will trap the fish. When this happens, the angler at the other end of the rod will detect some tug on the line. This is usually the signal to pull the fish out of the water. Pulling out the fish from the water often requires some skill since if not correctly done the fish can escape.

Angling has become very popular due to the thrill it provides for the angler. The moments of suspense and the adrenalin inspiring action of retrieving the trapped fish is a lot of fun. Many anglers today engage in various forms of angling competitions.
